On February 8, Weight Watchers announced its new marketing campaign offering their program for free to teenagers this summer.
Liam Preston, Head of the Be Real Campaign, said:
“For some people dieting programmes such as Weight Watchers offer a way to move from an unhealthy lifestyle to a healthy one. However, making a decision on whether to take on a dieting programme is often based on an individual’s perception of how their body looks.
“One of the issues with offering free membership to teenagers is that young people’s bodies are not fully developed during these teenage years, both in shape and size. Encouraging dieting and promoting weight-management techniques may actually be an unhealthy course of action for young people who are perfectly healthy.
“It’s also important to remember that young people are always more impressionable and offering them free membership, even with good intention, will provide an avenue for some young people to become fixated with their weight and weight-loss.”
